Applications are required for all courses of study offered by the Department of Physics.
Due to the limited number study placements, there is an admissions process or local NC for the Bachelor courses of study. In this process, applicants are ranked by their Abitur grade and are distributed among the study placements. The so called numerus clausus comes from the Abitur grade of the applicant, who received the last study placement. The numerus clausus depends on how many more applicants there are compared to the number of study placments. The value fluctuates from year to year and is difficult to predict. It is definitely worth applying. Applicants are also required to take the RWTH Mathematics and Natural Sciences Online Self Assessment and attend the Department of Physics Pre-Study Information Day. Please make note of the scheduled dates for the Pre-Study Information Day as soon as possible.
The number of study placements is not limited in the Master courses of study. There is an application process for these courses of study in order to review the formal admissions requirements and the technical requirements for admission to Master's studies. Here the knowledge and skills of the background education, usually Bachelor studies, are evaluated in comparison to the demands of Master's studies. All of the Bachelor courses of study in physics at all of the German universities have been reviewed and accepted for adequate technical prerequisites to the Master's in physics. Graduates from other courses of study and other universities should include a transcript and note about the module handbook of their previous studies.
You can find additional information about the application process from the Registrar's Office and our course of study descriptions.
